Welcome to our Careers Department
The Ruth Gorse Academy offers a comprehensive careers education programme that prepares students for the next steps in their education, training, or employment. We are committed to providing high-quality information, advice, and guidance to help all students make informed decisions about a wide range of future career pathways.
We provide access to a variety of inspiring activities, including employer talks, motivational speakers, workshops, mock interviews, workplace visits, college and university visits, and our annual Careers Fair.
Our Careers Team includes a member of the Senior Leadership Team with responsibility for careers, a Senior Careers Lead, a Careers Advisor, and a Progression Officer with links to higher education. Together, the team provides dedicated, impartial advice and guidance for all pupils from Year 7 to Year 11.
Our personalised advice and guidance include, but are not limited to:
- One-to-one guidance
- Support with applications to Further Education, Apprenticeships, and pathways into Higher Education
- Support for pupils and parents when choosing options in Year 9
- Continued support on and after results day regarding post-16 options
- Career-related learning opportunities for pupils and parents through workshops, taster days, trips, visits, careers fairs, and in-school speakers and events
- Working in partnership with universities to widen participation in Higher Education
- Bi-weekly careers tutorial activities for all students

We measure and assess the impact of the Careers programme on students by:
- Destinations of students to further education, apprenticeships and employment.
- Feedback from students.
- Questionnaires and evaluations after events and group sessions.
The CEIAG Programme will be reviewed on an annual basis by the careers leader and adopted where necessary. This will take into account any feedback from staff, students or external providers linked to the previous year’s activities.

Employers
As a school, we have a statutory commitment to uphold the Education Act 1997 and the recent Technical and Further Education Act 2017, which involves adhering to the Baker Clause that came into force on 2nd January 2018 (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/technical-education-and-apprenticeships-raising-awareness)
The policy statement from the school explains how providers of technical education, such as alternative 14-16 providers, Further Education colleges and apprenticeship providers can apply for access to speak with our students in Years 7-11 about the various education and training options available to them at 14-16 and post-16, including details of suitable access points within our school calendar and the lead contact at the school who can help to facilitate this.

The Gatsby Benchmarks
The Gatsby Career Benchmarks are the result of an international study to find the best practice in Career Guidance worldwide. The eight benchmarks underpin the Careers Information and Guidance programme that we offer at The Ruth Gorse Academy.
Students have different career guidance needs at different stages. Opportunities for advice and support need to be tailored to the needs of each student. A school’s careers programme should embed equality and diversity considerations throughout.
All teachers should link curriculum learning with careers. STEM subject teachers should highlight the relevance of STEM subjects for a wide range of future career paths.
Every student should have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace. This can be through a range of enrichment activities including visiting speakers, mentoring and enterprise schemes.
Every student should have first-hand experiences of the workplace through work visits, work shadowing and/or work experience to help their exploration of career opportunities, and expand their networks.
All students should understand the full range of learning opportunities that are available to them. This includes both academic and vocational routes and learning in schools, colleges, universities and in the workplace.
Every student should have opportunities for guidance interviews with a career adviser, who could be internal (a member of school staff) or external, provided they are trained to an appropriate level. These should be available whenever significant study or career choices are being made. They should be expected for all students but should be timed to meet their individual needs.
Go Higher West Yorkshire (GHWY)
Our school works in partnership with Go Higher West Yorkshire (GHWY). They provide activities for our pupils as part of the Uni Connect Programme such as taster days at colleges/universities or having speakers and workshops provided in school. The Uni Connect programme is a national initiative funded by the Office for Students. It offers activities, advice and information on the benefits and realities of going to university or college. Your young person may ave already taken part in some activities as part of the Uni Connect programme, and/or will take part in future activities.
To help Go Higher West Yorkshire report on the Uni Connect programme to the Office for students, our school have agreed to share some of your data with them. More information about what data will be shared, and about your rights can be found in the HEAT Information Sheet and Privacy Notice (see link below). Please take the time to read this document, as it provides all the information about how the data will be used, and what to do if you object. Please note that if you are a parent or career of a young person under 16 you can exercise the rights set out in the Privacy Notice on their behalf.
