Miss Mir met the Legally Blonde team in PD this week to celebrate their success. These students put on an exceptional production at the end of last half term, full of passion, energy, and pure magic! A massive well done to the entire Legally Blonde team, including all the staff who supported the event: Ms Atwell, Mr Harper, Ms Motta, Mr Raine, and Mr Varley.

The Mind Mate Ambassadors were invited for Principal’s Praise this half term. Their role within the academy is to raise awareness about mental health and wellbeing and to encourage open conversations about mental health. This academic year, they have led student assemblies and pop-up events at break and lunch, as well as meeting with Miss Mir to suggest mental wellbeing strategies for Year 11 in the run-up to the February mock examination series.

The Student Leadership Team and ACE Ambassadors were invited for Principal’s Praise this half term. ACE Ambassadors raise awareness of the Equality Act and the nine protected characteristics, promoting respectful and appropriate behaviour within the academy. The Student Leadership Team meet weekly to plan and deliver whole-school events, working with the Senior Leadership Team to ensure student voice continues to shape the academy.

Principal’s praise goes to our Year 8 and 9 female students who visited the STEM Centre in York to celebrate completing their Engineering Development Trust Bronze Award. They showed outstanding commitment and creativity, researching, designing, and building a sustainable city. They produced a detailed report, built a model, and presented to industry experts. We are extremely proud of their professionalism and hard work!

Congratulations to all our Year 11 students for their strong effort in the February mock examinations. Miss Mir delivered the mock celebration assembly, during which we praised students for the strong progress they made between the November and February mocks. #GainAtLeastAGrade!

We are incredibly proud of the excellent performance of our Hospitality students. Every single one of you has met or exceeded your ATG, which puts you in a fantastic position to go on and achieve brilliant results in your summer exams.

A massive well done as well to our dedicated teachers – Ms Hardman, Ms Bell and Ms Matthews for the outstanding support they provide in helping our young people achieve such success. Your hard work truly makes a difference.

The Year 7 football team had a fantastic run in the English Schools’ National Cup, reaching the quarter finals and finishing among the last eight schools in the country. The boys represented the academy brilliantly, showing great respect and sportsmanship throughout. Player of the match was Rodrigo Matzinhe, who showed excellent technique and determination until the final minute. #SuperProud!

Our rowers took part in the National Indoor Rowing Championships this half term. These events require hours of preparation, training and hard work, and we are incredibly proud of how our students performed. A huge well done to Noel Acheampong for securing a bronze medal!

Miss Mir was delighted to meet with three students who visited Chapel FM radio station this half term. Ahmed (Year 8), Halle (Year 11) and Anjolaoluwa (Year 10) took part in the First Story writing programme led by author Andy Craven Griffiths. Through this incredible opportunity, they wrote fantastic poems and stories which were shared live on Chapel FM during their visit.

Year 11 students have been working hard to complete their GCSE Art coursework, and Miss Mir was blown away by the incredible talent at the academy. She was particularly impressed by the phenomenal pieces produced by Channel and Focira. The level of detail, precision, accuracy and emotion in their work was outstanding. A massive well done! #Supertalented!

In preparation for Eid, the academy launched an Eid card competition. Focira (Yr11) and Arisha (Yr9) produced the winning designs, which are absolutely stunning. Their designs will be professionally printed and distributed to students across the academy who are celebrating Eid in March.

Principal’s Praise this week recognises Year 9 Basketball Leeds Schools winners and Year 10 Football Champions of Champions winners. This outstanding achievement reflects excellent performance, determination, teamwork, and commitment. We are immensely proud of all students who represented the school with distinction. Congratulations to everyone involved.

The first week back after the Easter holidays, Miss Mir met with Year 7 students who had demonstrated strong behaviour throughout the academic year. She was particularly impressed by the number of praise comments these students had received from their teachers. #SuperProud!

This half term, Miss Mir will be visiting Year 10 Form groups to praise students for their excellent revision in preparation for the Year 10 Masters Examinations.

On Friday 1 June, Year 11 students who had shown the most improvement by gaining the highest number of grade increases between the November and February mock examinations were rewarded with a trip to Pizza Express. These students demonstrated the greatest progress across all subjects within the year group. A massive well done to these students.

This week, Miss Mir met with Year 9 students who had demonstrated strong behaviour throughout the academic year. She was particularly impressed by the personal achievements of our students across a wide range of enrichment activities. #SuperProud!

Miss Mir was super impressed by the outstanding commitment shown by Year 7. Students proudly presented the work they were most proud of, ranging from artist research in Art to extended Purple Zone tasks in English.

Our Year 7 cohort has made a fantastic start to their journey at The Ruth Gorse Academy, and this is evident in their strong behaviour data, excellent ATELs and ATEFs, and impressive year-group attendance.

A huge congratulations to our Year 11 students on their Graduation. The event was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate their hard work, resilience, and achievements throughout their time at school. We are incredibly proud of all they have accomplished and wish them every success as they take their next steps.

PD Praise this week was awarded to Year 9. Miss Mir was incredibly impressed by the outstanding attitudes demonstrated by Year 9 students throughout this academic year. Many students have also maintained 100% attendance, reflecting their commitment, resilience, and dedication to their learning.

Congratulations to Lydia, whose dance team achieved 1st place in Pom, 2nd place in Hip Hop, and were crowned Grand Champions at the Legacy Dance & Cheer Competition. Lydia has also earned a bid to compete at the World Dance Summit in Orlando in 2027 and will represent her team in Portugal next week.

This week’s Principal’s Praise was awarded to those Year 8 students who have demonstrated exceptional standards of behaviour and attendance throughout the academic year.

Miss Mir was amazed by the number of students who achieved zero negative comments all year and accumulated a significant number of stamps and praise comments from academy staff.

Congratulations to Saanvi (Yr9), who was featured by Volunteer Team Leeds during National Volunteers Week for her work inspiring young people in coding and technology through her Duke of Edinburgh’s Award volunteering. We are incredibly proud of her leadership, community spirit, and the positive impact she has had on others.

A massive well done to Divyansh Singh and Noel Acheampong in 9.1 for winning gold in the J14 Boys A.

The J14 Boys’ A Final delivered one of the most memorable achievements in The Gorse Boat Club’s history. Showing exceptional determination, resilience, and teamwork, the crew fought back from third place at the 1000m mark to produce a stunning finish over the final 500m, securing the gold medal by just 0.81 seconds. The significance of this achievement cannot be overstated; it stands as a landmark moment for the club and a fitting reward for the crew’s hard work, dedication, and competitive spirit.

Year 7 are the first year group to receive Principal’s Praise this half term. Miss Mir was impressed by their strong attitudes to learning, reflected in the many stamps awarded by teachers in their planners, excellent engagement in lessons and strong attendance. Students also proudly shared artwork from their Sea Life project.
